The Daniel White Experience

Today, Moriba Cummings, Brandon Anderson, and I hosted a Robert Hall Informational, an event that should be hosted yearly.
During my time as a RA in Robert, I noticed two things: 1. Many people have misconstrued opinions and thoughts about Robert Hall and 2. The Robert Hall experience is a exclusive experience, which needs to be showcased. Tonight’s meeting answered all of the aforementioned thoughts.
With the help of Mr. Tweedle, we explained the Avant Garde community to the cadre of students and how we expect them to be Avant Garde/Out of the Box Leaders and transcend leadership to the next level. In addition, we told them about the Avant Garde application process, the building’s history, social interactions with other residents, and any other information that they wanted to know.
What made tonight special was hearing several of my former residents speak about their time at Robert and how it has fostered their growth both academically and personally. I’m glad to know that the Avant Garde learning community had such an impact during my leadership.
The informational culminated with a tour of the building, including the bathrooms and some resident’s rooms. Overall, tonight was a great experience and demonstrated that the Avant Garde application process will be highly competitive! Today, Moriba Cummings, Brandon Anderson, and I hosted a Robert Hall Informational, an event that should be hosted yearly.

Earlier this evening, I hosted a Learning Community Program, entitled “Need A Headshot?” with Graves RA Charles Brooks. As a Resident Advisor in the Building Opportunities for the Sophisticated Scholar (B.O.S.S.) Learning Community, I want to help mold the consummate professional.
My program, which featured photographer Tre’Von Hill, a Graves Hall Resident and current RA Candidate, allowed students to get a FREE, professional headshot. While students were getting their photos taken, Charles and I were talking about professionalism in the workplace and how style is a factor in creating a brand.
We had approximately 40 individuals to get their headshot taken, including  Corey Reed’s Vanguard Class, Dean Washington, Mr. Mercedes, Mr. Leigh, and Mr. Tweedle. In the future, I want to do this program again with Mays’ mentee hall, White Hall, and assist students in their pursuits to become great and prepared professionals. Earlier this evening, I hosted a Learning Community Program, entitled “Need A Headshot?” with Graves RA Charles Brooks. On February 16th, the College celebrated its annual Candle in the Dark Gala, which is the college’s main scholarship fundraiser. This year was my first time going, and I truly had a ball! Just being around so many influential black men in such an elegant environment was truly awe-inspiring. I was able to meet Morehouse men from all different generations, as well as network with several corporate sponsors.
Also, I was fortunate to have attended this event with my residents, both past and present, including eight gentlemen from my floor.  It is rare to find 20somethings in tuxedos an ball gowns, but it was an amazing sight seeing my classmates and peers in such an elevated atmosphere. With such a rare opportunity, I had to capture this lovely sight.
I encourage every Man of Morehouse to go to the gala at least once before they graduate. In response to the recent break-ins and Health and Safety violations in Mays Hall, I decided to host a Cleanest Room contest last week. Here, residents were encouraged to have the cleanest room and the winners would receive prizes. This program encouraged residents to live in clean and safe  living environments. The two winners were senior Michael Taylor and junior Wesley Hagler and they each won $10 Chipotle gift cards. On Thursday November 15th, I, along with colleague Charles Brooks of Samuel T. Graves Hall, hosted “Building Your Brand Like a B.O.S.S.”. Charles asked for my assistance with this program, because I hosted a similar program like this during my sophomore year when I was a RA in Robert Hall. I immediately accepted Charles’ request, and I thought it would be a great way to give back to my freshman residence hall and to introduce the freshmen to the Mays Hall Leaning Community.

We talked about building your brand as freshmen and how it is never too early to begin the process. I gave them simple tips and advice, such as my three steps of brand management. 1. Analyze your strengths and weaknesses  as well as your aspirations. 2. Make the necessary implementations. 3. Benchmark and measure your goals. The guys really enjoyed our program and I was glad to give back! On Thursday November 15th, I, along with colleague Charles Brooks of Samuel T.  While everyone was out partying and enjoying their Friday night, I had desk duty. Although bummed for spending one of my last weekends in the AUC at the desk, I thoroughly enjoyed conversing with my residents. From about 8pm-3am, I was talking to my residents about topics ranging from ecumenical diversity, public schools vs. private schools, and colors in a Crayola Crayon Box. It’s refreshing to see stimulating conversation in Mays Hall!  While everyone was out partying and enjoying their Friday night, I had desk duty. Fall 2012 Update!

Hello everyone! I am back! As many of you know, I was a RA in Joseph T. Robert Hall last year and was awarded the 2012 Robert Hall RA of the Year. This year, I am taking on a new challenge as a RA in Benjamin Elijah Mays Hall. Living in Mays Hall has brought on new joys and challenges, however, I am glad to serve my residents and help mold them as gentlemen!
